I really wish Blogger/Google/whatever would recognize when I want one blank line (not 2 or 3 or none at all) inserted in between lines of text instead of formatting my entry the way THEY want it!  Grrrr.....

D.D.’s Blue Notes
As mentioned on November 24, I had vowed to play 100% Canadian content throughout the month of December.  However, I miscalculated the date of last week’s show to be November 31st – which date, of course, does not exist in our hemisphere – it actually fell on December first  and did contain non-Canadian music selections.  Happily, though, there are still four weeks left in December, and these shows will be comprised entirely of Canadian music.  This is my Christmas gift to our nation’s musicians, who have given fans so much of themselves.
’tis the season to be merry, of course, but some of us in St. John’s have lost close family members or friends who are sorely missed, particularly at this time of year.  In that regard, the Compassionate Friends Newfoundland and Labrador Branch is holding a candlelight vigil at the Health Sciences Centre tomorrow evening from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in Room #2J619, just down the hall from the Pastoral Care office.  If you’d like to be a part of the gathering, you can call 753-3530.
The 2012 Mummer’s Festival is now underway in St. John’s.  The Victoria Park Poolhouse is hosting a couple of hobbyhorse workshops beginning tonight from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and tomorrow from 1-5 p.m.  On Monday, Tuesday and Thurday, they will be hosting ugly stick workshops.  The Rooms art gallery is hosting a lecture and public forum, entitled “How Do You Mummer, Anyway?” next Friday, December 12, and on Saturday, they will be screening “Mummer Movies:  CBC’s Land and Sea Mummer Episodes”, from 2:30-3:30 p.m.  There are several other events taking place on December 15, including a Mummer’s Parade Concert and Jam, also at The Rooms, and a Mummer-oke at the Georgestown Pub from 5-7 p.m.

Speaking of “ugly sticks”, later on next Saturday night, Chris Kirby (just back from Nashville) and the Marquee will be putting some jam on it when they are joined by the Horns of Justice AND new family member Professor Cowbell.  It’s a big night of funk and soul at Fat Cat Blues Bar on George Street.  You are invited to come dressed in your gnarliest festive wear, since there will be a prize for the UGLIEST CHRISTMAS SWEATER!!  AND, there will be a Jam Jam challenge. What's that? Gotta be there to find out!!  There will be a special opening performance by the super talented Brianna Gosse.
9O’ClockRocksDecember on Thursdays at The Levee with the likes of Dust Radio and Georgie and Jomie on December 13, Manifest and Pathological Lovers on December 20, and Pilot to Bombardier and Mercy the Sexton on December 27.  Beauwater and The Domestics were scheduled to perform this past Thursday.  If you’d like to have your NL events announced on-air, look me up on Facebook under “Mistyblue1955” and ask to be added as a friend.  It’s as simple as that.
The Long and McQuade benefit at Fat Cat on November 24 in aid of the Music Therapy Program at the Janeway raised a whopping $3,144.82.  Congratulations to all of the bands and solo musicians who performed for the cause, as well as the patrons who attended the wildly successful event.
In international news, the UK’s Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate has released a full-length CD entitled Invisible, and Secret Illusion of Athens, Greece, has released an EP called Point of No Return.
I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), the proud founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. the St. John’s Anti-Social Blues Conspiracy).  You’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, offering free group therapy, on The Charmer, that is, CHMR 93.5 on your radio’s FM band, streaming live online at chmr.ca, and broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825, so we’ve got all our bases covered.  Come on in for a visit – sign up for a show, or just buy some candies and necklaces, so we can stay in business.  Stay tuned for more tunes.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT – NOV. 24/12

Well, as much as I love the music of Rita Chiarelli and wish her success as CBC’s newest radio show host/music programmer, I can’t help but feel sorry for broadcasting graduates who have lost out on yet another opportunity to even begin to find paid work in their chosen profession.  I mean, seriously, how are they supposed to compete with international celebrities?  Then again, aging musicians are feeling the big squeeze-out these days by performers who are barely out of their diapers, so I guess they have to find a new way to parlay a living in the spotlight.  Community/campus radio stations do, however, offer very inexpensive training and the opportunity to gain real experience (if not an actual income) in broadcasting.  If you are serious about doing this as a career, whether you have studied broadcasting or not, feel free to contact the program director at CHMR.  The station is always looking for new talent, male or female.  The information is on our website at chmr.ca.

Competing with Long & McQuade’s Music Therapy Fundraiser tonight at Fat Cat Blues Bar is Sherry Ryan, who is performing her tribute to the music of Lucinda Williams at The Rock House, also on George Street, so it’s a great night to get George-faced, as the T-shirt logo goes.

The Statoil/MusicNL 2012 Christmas Songwriting Contest is now accepting submissions for original holiday and seasonal music.  This is one for the youngsters, as it’s open to songwriters 19 and under.  The contestants will be competing for recording time at Groove Den Studios, with mixing and mastering at The Blue Room, music video production by HeavyWeather, web development by Dc Design House, as well as cash prizes and the opportunity to perform (with parental consent) at the 3rd annual MusicNL Christmas concert on December 17 at The Ship Pub.  The deadline for submissions is Friday, November 30, at 4:30 p.m.  Late entries will not be accepted.  Visit musicnl.ca for full details or use that antiquated invention known as the telephone and call them at 709-754-2574.

The 10th Annual Christmas Goose benefit concert and CD release will be taking place at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Saturday, December 1st.  Featured performers include Al Wood, Arthur McGregor, Chris White, Finest Kind, John Hanson, Mary Moore & Marylise Chauvette, Pat Moore, Tom Lips and YOU, the audience. Come out for a wonderful evening of original and favourite Christmas and seasonal songs in support of the Ottawa Food Bank.

I just found out earlier this week that I’m working for a keyboardist/director whose brother is Jim Vivian, formerly of Toronto band The Shuffle Demons, as well as Rob Connell and the Boss Brass.  Mr. Vivian, a member of the jazz studies faculty at U. of T, is very much in demand as a bassist, having performed and recorded with numerous jazz musicians such as Don Thompson, Jeff Johnston, Sonny Greenwich, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, and John Abercrombie.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with selected “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.  Every once in a while I will dub a particular male “an honourary Iron Maiden”.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – NOV. 24/12

Here’s a reminder of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs, with local proceeds going to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.  That’s happening at Fat Cat Blues Bar on George Street tonight, beginning around 7 p.m. and continuing on through the night.  The performers include The Replacements, Rust, Dan Doiron Band, Prosser’s Rock, One Night Stand, “Friends of Music Therapy”, and possibly more.

Ken Tizzard and Bad Intent + Monday Nights will be performing this coming Thursday at The Levee, also on George Street, as part of the weekly 9 O’Clock Rocks musical party.  Naturally, the gigs will start at 9 p.m. and be finished well before midnight.

Canadian musician Bruce Cockburn, who has been offering his recordings and live performances since the late ’60s, early ’70s, was awarded a lifetime achievement award from SOCAN on November 19.  On December 14th, he will be joining Jackson Browne and other musicians at a benefit concert for Native American activist Leonard Peltier Benefit at the Beacon Theatre in New York.  Peltier has been imprisoned for 37 years.  Cockburn’s latest CD, Small Source of Comfort is available from True North Records, his long-standing record label, based in Burlington, ON.

New Canadian CDs in CHMR’s record library include releases by Revelstoke, Lower Companions, Julie Doiron, Manafest, Andy Shauf, Sabrina Whyatt, Barney Bentall, Eyeswide, The Unquiet Dead, Danger Cat, Les Hay Babies, and Tippy Agogo & Bill Bourne’s Amoeba Collective.  Additional  recent Canadian releases are out there by Jack de Kezyer, Danny Marks, Corey Lueck and the Smoke Wagon Blues Band, Tusket, String Bone, Grant Lyle, Al Wood & The Woodsmen, and the Jimmy Bowskill Band, the latter which includes a smokin’ version of a tune written by Grand Funk’s Mark Farner from their Closer to Home LP.

And speaking of the Corey Lueck and Smoke Wagon Blues Band, they are on the roster of performers scheduled to play at the Leander Boat Club in Hamilton, ON, on Sun., Dec. 2nd.  Resident sax master and singer Sonny Del-Rio will be celebrating "55 Years of Rockin'.... and Rollin' On".  Other performers on the roster are Ray Materick, Darcy Hepner, We Got Blues, Jude Johnson, Carl Horton, and Ronny and the Rockets.  All of the performers are donating their time to come out and party with Sonny, and the proceeds are going to the CKOC Christmas Miracle.  Sonny Del-Rio has been putting on a Christmas benefit annually for many years.  Having met him in person, I know for a fact that he really is a very caring, community-oriented person, and he’s in good company here, for sure.

Also on December 2, in Toronto, “Bash for the Boogieman (a.k.a. Rick Gunn) – Take II” is being held at Revival Bar on College Street, from 4-11 PM.  The fundraiser’s proceeds will assist Rick with the onerous financial burden associated with his being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, or bone marrow cancer.  Some of the scheduled performers include Terry Draper of Klaatu, David Henman of April Wine, Bob “The Iceman” Segarini, Sebastian Agnello, The Virgins – Unplugged, Wendell Ferguson, and Brave & Crazy, just one of the many great bands Rick has played guitar with over the years.

I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), the proud founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. the St. John’s Anti-Social Blues Conspiracy).  You’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, offering free group therapy, on CHMR 93.5 FM, streaming live online at The Charmer, that is, chmr.ca, broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825.  Stay tuned for more tunes.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT – NOV. 10/12

As mentioned on “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, members of local cover band Prosser’s Rock will be paying a visit to our studios here at CHMR. They will be primarily promoting their appearance and those of other bands performing on behalf of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs. Local proceeds will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital. As a secondary topic they will be talking about their alternate careers as musicians versus their erstwhile professional day-jobs and preoccupations as parents. In the event that you miss the interview, you can catch them live at Fat Cat on Nov. 24. They are all local musicians who would appreciate your support.

I have to admit I’ve almost completely lost track of what’s happening on my Facebook page, so I would like to offer my apologies to those whose birthday or other special event I missed in the last couple of weeks. The same goes with my emails – just way too many to keep pace with. Eventually, though, I will read and respond to any non-spamming messages. I have to say I get far more submissions from male musicians, and way more from non-Canadians, which I find very curious, so if you are a female Canadian musician serious about getting radio airplay, feel free to send me one or two introductory mp3s at ddrocker@yahoo.com. Please mention CHMR and/or “Iron Maidens” in the subject line, so I’m sure to open the message.

The Salty Dolls and the Moonshine Men will be performing at the Rose and Thistle Pub on Water Street tonight, at around 8:30 p.m. Fabulous lead vocalist Suzanne Power has been doing a great job of promoting other local musicians here in St. John’s, so this is your chance to see and hear her in action!

Tracy K and Blue Thunder did succeed in winning the local vote to represent Thunder Bay, ON, at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis – congratulations and good luck down south! As mentioned previously, Sunday Wilde’s new CD, He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, is almost ready for its official launch, but she is already getting airplay for a couple of tunes from it.

If you or someone you know is mourning the loss of a child, The Compassionate Friends Canada, Newfoundland Branch, holds an informal gathering of support for bereaved parents on the third Thursday of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for November 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Health Sciences Centre, in Room 2J619. For more information, email st.johnsnl@tcfcanada.net.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with selected “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers. Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – NOV. 10/12

If you have any local arts & entertainment news to impart regarding the province of NL, particularly of the blues variety, but not necessarily so, feel free to contact me at ddrocker@yahoo.com or mistyblue1955@hotmail.com.

On next week’s edition of “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, members of local cover band Prosser’s Rock will be my guests in the studio here at CHMR. They will primarily be promoting their appearance and those of other bands performing on behalf of the St. John’s branch of Long & McQuade’s annual national fundraiser for children’s music therapy programs. Local proceeds will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital. As a secondary topic they will be talking about their alternate careers as musicians versus their erstwhile professional day-jobs.

If you’re like me and find it impossible to attend late-night gigs during the work week or even Sunday nights, you should consider taking in the 9 O’Clock Rocks November weekly series of events at The Levee on George Street. This past Thursday featured CrashJonesBand + Bedlam Beggars, and on Thursday, November 15, Hellfire Club and Jigger will take the stage. They will be followed by Wheadeater and 2 Guitars Clash on November 22nd, and then Ken Tizzard and Bad Intent + Monday Nights will perform on November 29. Naturally, the gigs will start at 9 o’clock and be finished well before midnight, so that sounds ideal to me, barring impromptu chauffeur duties.

The final tweaks for Atikokan blueswoman Sunday Wilde’s fourth CD, entitled He Gave Me a Blue Nightgown, are well underway, so there’s a thought for a unique Christmas present. In other brand-new Canadian CD news, Ottawa’s Three Times Lucky is officially launching Down to Texas at the famous Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, QC, less than an hour’s drive from the capital.

In international news, the 12th annual Jam for Cans fundraiser will be collecting food and monetary donations in exchange for some great live music at Highway 99 blues club in Seattle, WA, this Thursday, November 15. The event was founded and is hosted by Sheri Humphres and her saxophonist/producer husband Raven Humphres.

M.C. Records in Northport, NY (part of Long Island), is pleased to announce it will donate 30% of all direct sales proceeds to the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Sandy victims. The offer stands from now through Thursday, November 15. The blues and roots-friendly award-winning record company is home to artists such as Odetta, Rick Holmstrom, Cyril Neville, Cindy Bullens, Big Jack Johnson, R.L. Burnside, Anders Osbourne, Pinetop Perkins, and Debbie Davies. M.C. Records President Mark Carpentieri’s own power and heat sources were out for over a week and some of his family members are still without electricity. You can take care of Christmas-shopping business AND help out our neighbours to the south at the same time – a win-win opportunity. They are online at mc-records.com.

I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), the proud founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. the St. John’s Anti-Social Blues Conspiracy). You’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada”, offering free group therapy, on CHMR 93.5 FM, streaming live online at www.mun.ca/chmr, and broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825. Stay tuned for more tunes.

9) Right to Asylum [indie mp3] – “Civil War” (4:02)
10) The Mason Rack Band (Limits of Grip) – “Beast” (4:21)
11) Dirty Names (Sweat Box) – “Puppy Love” (2:26)
12) Big Jeezus Truck (Mechanicsville) – “Losin’ It” (3:02)
13) The Flying Snowman (Umgawa!) – “Beauty and the Beast” (2:50)

Great Big Rock Jam Report

If you or someone you know is mourning the loss of a child, The Compassionate Friends Canada, Newfoundland Branch, holds an informal gathering of support for bereaved parents on the third Thursday of each month.  The next meeting is scheduled for November 22, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Health Sciences Centre, in Room 2J619.  For more information, email st.johnsnl@tcfcanada.net.

Canadian musician Bill Bourne is definitely no slacker.  His latest CD, Songs from a Gypsy Caravan, has barely seen the light of day, and he’s now got a brand-new project with Tippy Agogo being released this week on the Busted Flat Records label, calling itself Amoeba Collective.  Bill and Tippy, both famously bohemian, previously collaborated as Nerkelwerks.  With Amoeba Collective, they are joined by guitarist Madagascar Slim, pianist Tom Mennier, drummer Michelle Josef (of Hey Stella), and bassist Donato Scipioni.  The project is described in the Sarah French Publicity press release as “An organic rendition of Blues, Rock, World Beat, with a Dash of Hip-Hop and Country”.

Brownsville Station, who recorded the original version of “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” (before Aerosmith covered it), has a brand-new release, as well, appropriately entitled Still Smokin’.

Canada’s The Donefors are heading out on tour this month with their literally titled “Award-Winning Album”.  Beginning on November 7, they’ll be at Brutopia in Montreal, followed immediately afterwards by four dates in NB, i.e. Le Vieux Poele in Edmundston, Shiretown Publicans in Hampton, The Capital in Fredericton, and Plan B in Moncton.  On November 12, they’ll be at Gus’s Pub in Halifax, after which they head back east to the Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa, Gallaghers in Hamilton, Paddy’s in Sarnia, and then at the Music Awards Ceremony in Hamilton, ON, on November 17.

Erin Costelo and guitarist Clive MacNutt had to reschedule their trip from Halifax to St. John’s last week due to nasty weather, but hopefully they will get here soon.

Vicky Hynes will be presenting the 12th annual Feast of Cohen at the Arts and Culture Centre on December 28 and 29, so you’d best get your tickets soon.  The event will feature NL artists, such as Colleen Power (also our News Director here at CHMR), Des Walsh, Jill Porter, Bryan Hennessey, Sean and Geoff Panting, Sandy Morris, Jenny Gear, Liz Solo, Mark Bragg, Lori Cooper, Katie Baggs, Neil Conway, Boomer Stamp, and, of course, Vicky Hynes herself, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen.  Speaking of Katie Baggs, she scooped up the 2012 MusicNL award for female artist of the year, Mark Bragg won for alternative artist/group of the year, and Sandy Morris won for best side musician.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with more “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.

7) Jeff Menteer (w/ Stacy Jones) (The Nature of My Dreams) – “The Great Mystery That Surrounds Us” (4:55)
8) Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket (Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket) – “Black Cloud Joe” (3:31)
9) Dalannah Gail Bowen (Them Menz) – “Them Menz” (5:17)
10) Pamela Morgan (7 Years) – “Stay” (3:48)
11) Nicole Taylor (Ambiguosexual) – “The End” (1:15)
12) Sue Foley (Queen Bees – The Antones Collection) – “Lightning Boogie” (1:45)

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – NOV. 3/12

If you have any local arts & entertainment news to impart regarding the province of NL, particularly of the blues variety, but not necessarily so, feel free to contact me at ddrocker@yahoo.com or mistyblue1955@hotmail.com.

Following on the heels of his successful recording, Aspects of Oscar, bassist composer and educator Dave Young and an all-star band will perform a musical tribute to the late, great Canadian jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson on Friday, November 9, at Hugh’s Room in Toronto,.  The doors will open at 6 p.m., and the performance will begin at 8:30.  The tickets are $29.50 in advance and $32.50 at the door.  Dave Young, who recorded with Lenny Breau and numerous Canadian and international jazz musicians, was also a long-time musical associate of Oscar Peterson.  He will be accompanied by Robi Botos on piano, Warren Stirzsinger on guitar, Terry Clarke on drums, and Denzal Sinclaire on vocals.  For more information, contact Richard Flohil at 416-351-1323 or email him at rflohil@sympatico.ca.

The Catbird Jazz Society is pleased to announce that the Mark Segger Sextet will be performing at George’s Roadhouse in Sackville, at 8 p.m. on November 16.  Although the “avant-chamber-jazz” sextet was formed in 2008 in Toronto, drummer/composer Mark Segger trained at Francis Xavier University in New Brunswick.

One of our sibling community radio stations, CKCU, residing on the campus of Carleton University in Ottawa, has almost completed its annual funding drive.  The station has had a great amount of community support, not just from its listeners, but from the mayor, the CBC, and a former show host and current drummer with Arcade Fire, i.e. Jeremy Gara, who advises that the band is hard at work on a follow-up to 2010’s The Suburbs.

Speaking of fundraisers, our own CHMR holds several, with some of them ongoing throughout the year, such as the candy sales you often see on the go in the Unicentre.  We have a current fundraising campaign selling necklaces made from semi-precious stones such as tiger eyes, amethyst, lapis, turquoise, pink quartz and agate.  They are only $20 each, and for an extra $1.50, they can be enclosed in coloured gift boxes.  Drop in to CHMR, one floor below the Unicentre food court, during business hours and speak to Kathy Rowe, our station manager.  Even better, sign up to host your own show while you are it!  Training is provided for a nominal fee.  I got conned into it seven years ago, at the age of 50, so if I can do it, why not you?  In other local fundraising news, here’s a heads-up regarding a benefit for the Janeway Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Program, scheduled to take place later this month.  The details are still being hammered out, so I’ll provide an update on that in a week or two.

10) David Rotundo (No Looking Back) – “I Don’t Need Nobody” (3:52)

2) Randy Oxford Band (w/ Patti Allen) (Big Blues for Little Bill) – “Another Rainy Day” (5:46)

Great Big Rock Jam Report – Oct. 27/12

As mentioned in the previous show, I wasn’t feeling well enough last night to check out either The Salty Dolls & the Moonshine Men at the Rose & Thistle or Skank & the Discounts at the Ship Pub.  Hopefully I’ll be recovered by tomorrow night to see Chris Kirby, as well as Erin Costelo and her guitarist Clive MacNutt, who are making a return visit to The Rock from Halifax.  Erin and Chris both have CDs they are currently promoting – Chris, of course, with his MusicNL award-winning Wonderizer, and Erin, with her brand-new release, We Can Get Over.  I’ll be playing a track from that disc right after this report.

In American female blues news, the 2nd annual New Mexico Blues Society’s ‘’Cused of the Blues” Fest took place in Albuquerque yesterday and featured “Women of the Blues” at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center.  Scheduled performers included Twisted Mojo (f. Beth McCormack), Secret Seven (f. Marilyn Hubbert), Anna Marie Anglada’s Bad Katz Blues Band, Zenobia, Suzy Q w/ Rudy Boy Experiment, Sherri and the Ex’s, and Sally Townes.  There was no cover charge, but they did raffle off door prizes and collected money for their scholarship and Blues in the School programs.  Bluesman Charlie Musselwhite donated a signed harmonica for the auction.

Montreal’s Orit Shimoni, recording under the name, Little Birdie, has just released her fourth CD, entitled Bare Bones.  The title refers to the fact that is a truly solo album.  I’ll be playing tracks from it starting on November 10, but if you can’t wait until then, you can scoop up your own copy at CD Baby.  Just search for Little Birdie, and all four of her albums will come up onscreen.

A little while ago, I was asked by Dale Schimpf, President of the East Coast Blues Society in Halifax, to compile a list of local blues performers here in St. John’s or elsewhere in the province.  I could only think of a couple who dedicate their repertoire solely to the blues genre, e.g. Denis Parker and Darren Cooper.  That being said, if you are a blues-focused performer/recording artist (male or female) and you are interested in being included in a Newfoundland & Labrador branch of the East Coast Blues Society, you can contact Dale at the blues@eastlink.ca or visit eastcoastblues.ca.  Since they are already an established blues society, you don’t need to fret about being the first to join.

If you are not able to tune into CHMR regularly on Saturday mornings, you can always get your blues music fix on Sunday morning or Monday evenings with resident blues promoter and long-time CHMR show host, Terry Parsons.  His “Blind Lemon Blues” show airs right after his “Cosmic Debris” musical melange, which begins at 7 p.m.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with Erin Costelo on “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.

6) Erin Costelo (We Can Get Over) – “Count to 10” (2:43)
7) Clear (Hard Love) – “Billiards Hotel” (4:40)
8 Vanessa Peters (The Burn The Truth The Lies) – “The State I’m Living In” (3:41)
9 Marie-Josee Houle (Monsters) – “Collarbone” (3:48)
10) Natalia & Montuno (Moving North) – “La Fiesta” (4:21)
11) Hotcha! (Dust Bowl Roots – Songs for the New Depression) – “Ain’t What You Do” (1:54)
12) Sue Foley (Queen Bees – The Antones Collection) – “Lightning Boogie” (1:45)

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – OCT. 27/12

If you have any local arts & entertainment news to impart regarding the province of NL, particularly of the blues variety, but not necessarily so, feel free to contact me at ddrocker@yahoo.com or mistyblue1955@hotmail.com.  You will get full credit for your contribution to these blues notes.

The new-generation blues music collective known as The 24th Street Wailers, hot on the 2012 release of Unshakeable, is set to record a live album at Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs in Halifax, NS, on Nov 9.  Michael Archer, bass guitarist with the 24th Street Wailers, was rightfully disappointed to learn that the man responsible for the shooting death of Michael’s brother, Jesse, has been sentenced to a mere five years’ incarceration.

Unfortunately I wasn’t feeling well enough last night to check out either The Salty Dolls & the Moonshine Men at the Rose & Thistle or Skank & the Discounts at the Ship Pub.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation has announced its list of nominees for the 2013 induction, with the live ceremony taking place in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theatre L.A. on Thursday, April 18.  The show will be broadcast on HBO at a later date.  The actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is located in Cleveland, Ohio.  Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry; however, for the first time, fans can vote for five of the predetermined nominees for 2013, comprised of The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Albert King, Kraftwerk, The Marvelettes, The Meters, Randy Newman, N.W.A., Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Donna Summer, and last, but certainly not least, Canadian progressive rock band Rush.

As if Cleveland weren’t famous enough for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame landmark institution, plans are underway to build the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame Museum there, as well.  This particular museum’s inaugural induction ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Cleveland's Music Hall/Public Auditorium, the same venue normally used for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.  Some of the R&B Hall of Fame induction nominees include James Brown, The Temptations, The Hesitations, Otis Redding, The O'Jays, Dick Clark, Gerald Levert, Aretha Franklin, Alan Freed, and The Dramatics. As well, the Reverend Al Sharpton will receive the Ron Banks Humanitarian Award for his life-long support to many rhythm & blues and gospel artists.

Ottawa-raised Raoul Bhaneja of the Maple Blues Award-winning band Raoul & the Big Time and a long-time TV, film, and theatre actor, is currently in St. John, New Brunswick, where he will be presenting his Gemini Award-nominated portrayal of Hamlet (Solo).  Tonight, beginning at 7:30 p.m., is the last performance before he returns to Toronto.

I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955), founder and sole member of NL Blues Society (a.k.a. “Iron Maidens”, hosted by one of my numerous alter-egos, Honey Girl, by name, is up next at 10, followed by a prerecorded segment of Converts of Reason with Rory and Liam, and then Newfound Records with Wayne Tucker at noon.  In the meantime, stay tuned for more tunes.

GREAT BIG ROCK JAM REPORT - OCT. 20/12

This just in – blueswoman Sunday Wilde of Atikokan, ON, has just become engaged – congratulations, girl!

Here are just a few mentions of new releases from Canadian female musicians:

Guelph, Ontario, blueswoman Gayle Ackroyd Gibson, recording simply under the name, Gayle Ackroyd, has a new CD out, called Give It All You Got.  I’ll be playing a track from that – a Neville Brothers’ tune entitled “Yellow Moon”, on next week’s show.

For jazz music-lovers, Toronto-based Donna Greenberg has released a multilingual (mainly English, French and Spanish) selection of material entitled Song in the Wind.

Lindi Ortega, also of Toronto, but rumoured to be hanging out somewhere in Tennessee these days, has just released Cigarettes & Truckstops.  She’s currently on tour, hitting the Metropolis in Montreal on the 23rd of this month, the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on the 26th, and gradually heading south to Atlanta, Chattanooga, and San Antonio.

Toronto-based Lily Frost has just released a new CD, as well, entitled Do What You Love.  That release is now also in CHMR’s humongous music library, and hopefully I will get a chance to play something from it in the near future.  There has actually been a ton of new releases added to the library since I started back here at the end of June, but as I usually program my shows in advance using my own ever-increasing music collection, playlist selections taken from the library tend to be quite rare.  It’s simply not practical for me.

The new-generation blues music collective known as The 24th Street Wailers, hot on the 2012 release of Unshakeable, is set to record a live album at Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs in Halifax, NS, on November 9.  Speaking of Halifax, it is the home of the East Coast Blues Society.  The organization welcomes musicians from the province of NL, so check them out at eastcoastblues.ca.

I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with more “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or ensembles comprised of both genders.

9) Zabeth Dkos (Unsigned, Undefined, Unapologetic) – “Pages” (3:18)
10) Dream Aria (Transcend) – “The Rhythm of Now” (4:08)
11) El Fuego (The Riddle) – “Down” (4:01)
12) Chantel McGregor (Like No Other) – “Cat Song” (2:15)

I was amazed to see that Mitch Ryder of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels is still rockin’ that devil with the blue dress after all these decades.  So, too, apparently are Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Chubby Checker & The Wildcats, and Gary Lewis & The Playboys.  They are all part of the live performance boat cruise series known as “Concerts at Sea”.  Hey, hey, my, my…

For those of you who get prematurely excited about Christmas-shopping, Canadian West Coast blues guitarist/composer and vocalist David Gogo is releasing Christmas with the Blues on his long-time label, Cordova Bay Records, next month.  According to the press release by Sarah French Publicity, Christmas with the Blues features seven blues-inspired standards and two originals and is a blend of traditional blues with a few hints of roots, gospel and rock ‘n roll.  Also sitting in on the recording are some of Canada’s best musicians, including Billy Hicks, David Vest, Phil Dwyer, Shawn “The Harpoonist” Hall, Tina Jones, and Camille Miller.  It will be in stores on November 13.

For classical music-lovers in Ontario’s Steeltown, Guitar Hamilton is pleased to present Argentinian virtuoso guitarist Victor Villadangos, performing the tango masterworks of Piazzolla and the Sonatas of Torroba and Gustavino.  The performance takes place tomorrow night at the Hamilton Conservatory of Arts at 7 p.m.  For more information, visit guitarhamilton.com.

Athens-based band Secret Illusion has begun recording its second CD, following the Turn Back Time EP.  Guitarist Filippos Papakyriakou says:  “Some keyboard parts are already completed, and within the next week some guitar parts will also be ready, before the drums take place.  Later this year we will release a single that will be distributed only in digital form through well-known sites...this will be a very small taste of the new album that is planned to be released before the summer of 2013.”

I’d like to wish drummer John Funkinator of Ottawa band The Funktion a belated happy birthday.  His big celebration was yesterday, although it might continue into tonight.

This past Thursday evening, the Kidney Foundation of Canada Newfoundland and Labrador kicked off their eBay auction of celebrity paintings for their “A Brush of Hope” campaign.  Several masterpieces being auctioned off were displayed in the Rocket Room of the Rocket Bakery on Water Street on Thursday night.  I’m not sure whether they will remain there for the duration of the bidding period, which runs through until October 29.  St. John’s MusicNL award-winner Chris Kirby is involved in the campaign and perhaps has his own artwork being auctioned off for the cause.  Kidney donors are greatly needed across Canada, and since most of us are able to spare one, please give it serious consideration, or at least buy some artwork to help the Kidney Foundation with its funding needs.

Great Big Rock Jam Report

Sad news from the U.S. West Coast - Singer Kathi MacDonald of Anacortes, Washington, and based for years in San Francisco and the Greater Seattle Area, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 3, after slipping into a coma.  Early in her career she was an Ikette backing singer with Ike and Tina Turner and went on to perform and record on a long-term basis with Long John Baldry, best known for his hit, “Don’t Try to Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll”.  Among the numerous bands and artists she worked with was Big Brother and the Holding Company (post-Janis Joplin’s departure from the band), and more recently she recorded with that band’s drummer and his new troupe, The Dave Getz Breakaway.  She also made a duo recording with John Lee Hooker guitarist Rich Kirch earlier this year.  She released several CDs under Kathi McDonald & Friends, and also contributed to the Seattle Women in Rhythm and Blues project.  The Washington Blues Society inducted her into their Hall of Fame in 1999.
There are several special events and festivals happening this month in St. John’s – firstly, for this Thanksgiving weekend, the Qidi Vidi Village Plantation is hosting the Feast of Pottery, an exhibit of functional and beautiful dinnerware and serving pieces by award-winning North American potters and ceramic artists.  It’s on today, tomorrow and Monday from 10 a.m. ’til 4 p.m.
The Festival of New Dance starts on October 9 and runs through October 14.  To check out the performance schedule and event venues, visit festivalofnewdance.ca.
That will be followed by the Women’s Film Festival running from Oct. 16-20, inclusive.
On Wednesday, October 19, at the Ship Pub, off Duckworth Street, the Newfoundland and Labrador Musicians’ Association will be holding a fundraising concert.  All proceeds will help establish the Newfoundland and Labrador Musicians’ Emergency Fund.   The door opens at 10 p.m. $15 at the door.

Republic of Doyle’s Lynda Boyd, Krystin Pellerin and Sean Panting will be singing jazz and blues standards, along with favourite local jazz and blues musicians, Mary Barry, Bill Brennan, Shawn Beresford, Gary Johnston, Brad Jefford, and more.  The contact email address is cfm820@gmail.com or you can call 709-722-8005.
The city, and indeed the whole province, is celebrating its 10th annual Ocean Week from Oct. 21-27, and once you’re done celebrating the elixir of life on the 27th, you can take in the St. John’s Halloween Mardi Gras.  For info, call 722-7634 or visit georgestreetlive.ca - fun times in Canada’s “Far East”!
I’m Honey Girl, and I’ll be right back with more “Iron Maidens”, a program comprised of music composed and/or recorded by women determined to succeed in the industry alongside their male peers.  Playlist selections include male-female duos or bands comprised of both genders.

D.D.’s Blue Notes
Saskatoon blues-rock guitar teen sensation Jordan Cook (now calling himself Reign Wolf – “reign” as in “rule” – is all grown up now and touring the U.S. from west to east, with a brief detour to Austin, Texas, and later dates in Germany and The Netherlands.   Playing publicly since the age of eight, Jordan seems to be first and foremost a live performer.  I have seen no evidence of any official recording being released between the Jordan Cook Band’s 2001 Transitions EP and his brand-new full-length CD, 7 Deadly Sins, but there are quite a few live video recordings at reignwolf.com that you might want to check out.  He currently makes his home in Seattle, WA.

Another Canadian band making waves south of the border are Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, no doubt due to their successful collaboration with American female musicians on their Kings & Queens project.  They’ve got dates this week in Arlington, VA, Red Hook and Stony Brook, both in NY, and then they are heading south to Franklin, TN, on October 20.

Speaking of Tennessee, and in particular, Nashville, that’s where Juno award-winner Old Man Luedecke (based in Chester, NS) recorded his brand-new CD, Tender Is the Night, with folk hero Tim O’Brien.  Luedecke is embarking on a tour across Canada that will take him as far west as Victoria, B.C., and in the east to Charlottetown, P.E.I., and including dates in Halifax and Chester, NS (his home base).
Doug Carter, Greater Hamilton Area musician, author of “Cool Fool”, and co-composer, with Mike MacMillan, on Guitar Mikey’s newest release, Out of the Box, tells me the CD has reached #1 three times on the Canadian Roots Music Report and charted in the Top 10 on the US Blues Chart. It is now striking the ears of Americana Program Directors and listeners alike, getting airplay in the States, Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the UK, and, of course, right here on CHMR in St. John’s, NL, Canada.  It’s not just a ‘good’un’, mates – it’s great!  For info on Doug Carter’s book, visit coolfoolthebook.wordpress.com.
American slide guitarist and vocalist par excellence J.B. Ritchie, along with long-time bass guitarist, Frank Bandy of Teardrop Records, will be performing live tonight in Chicago at Buddy Guy’s Legends nightclub.  If I could be granted one musical wish, it would be a free trip to Chicago and a front-row seat at that world-famous venue.

D.D.’s BLUE NOTES – SEPT. 29/12

Juno award-winning guitarist Jack de Keyzer is getting set to release an all-new original studio recording of blues-rock music entitled Electric Love.  It’s scheduled to be launched in late October, early November.

High-profile Toronto musicians probably owe a great deal of their success to long-time Toronto music promoter Gary17 as they do to the recently-deceased Sam the Record Man.  Gary17 was the original owner and publisher of the legendary t.o. nite magazine and is the current publisher of Toronto Moon.  He may not be savviest of businessmen, but he has consistently poured his whole heart and soul (not to mention his own wallet) into the task of sharing his keen ear for musical talent, whether they be live performers or recording artists, as well.  Because of his persistence in helping others achieve fame and glory, to his own detriment, he has once again fallen on hard times and needs more subscribers to Toronto Moon to help him get back on his feet.  If you’re based in the Greater Toronto Area and are serious about your musical career, it’s a worthwhile and very inexpensive investment.  As well, having worked as a reporter for him myself, I know he gives back 200% to his loyal supporters.  For more info on getting your own career kickstarted, you can email him at therealgary17@gmail.com.

Speaking of promoting local musicians, St. John’s Chris Kirby, who opened for 8 Ball Aitken at Distortion last week, has been nominated for five MusicNL awards for his brilliant Wonderizer release, which also features Juno award-winner “Southside” Steve Marriner of Ottawa.  Nashville-based 8 Ball, a country music award-nominee in his native Australia, struck me as being a mix of John Lee Hooker, Arlo Guthrie, John Mellencamp, and John Fogerty all rolled into one.  And that glorious mane of long red hair – oh, my!  Next week, I’ll be featuring tracks from his Alive in Tamworth CD, now available at Fred’s Records, so I hope you can tune in for that.  You can also pick up a copy of Wonderizer at Fred’s.  Check out musicnl.ca for a complete list of the nominees.

Also coming up are the Maple Blues Awards in Toronto, as well as East Coast Music Week 2013, taking place from March 6-10 in Moncton, NB.

One last musical coda, musician Mike McDonald, not to be confused with the international comic of the same name, has started a Sunday singer-songwriter evening at The Levee on George Street.  I had a chance to check it out a couple of weeks ago, as it was slated to run from 7-11 p.m.  It started a wee bit later than that, but it’s a no-nonsense, well-run event, that included six or seven performers, with only a few minutes’ break in between sets.  I only just wish The Levee would provide some coffee instead of just booze for refreshment, as the event is geared more towards listening rather than loud partying.  Rowdy Blues it ain’t, but there’s no reason it couldn’t be, other than a Monday morning hangover.

I’m D.D. Rocker (a.k.a. Misty Blue 1955) and you’re listening to “Rockin’ the Blues from Canada” on CHMR 93.5 FM, streaming live online at www.mun.ca/chmr, and broadcasting on Rogers TV Channel 942 and Bell Aliant Channel 825.  “Iron Maidens” is up next at 10, followed by Converts of Reason with Rory and Liam, and then Newfound Records with Wayne Tucker at noon.  In the meantime, stay tuned for more tunes.
