An organization known as the Portland/Jamestown/Winterbrook
Recreation Committee has elected to name a new playground in memoriam for
Jordan Wells, who died tragically on February 29 in a drowning incident. The committee is hoping to raise
approximately $10,000 towards the building of the playground in Jamestown, and online
donations can be made via PayPal at
www.portlandjamestownwinterbrookrecreation.com.
As mentioned in the Great
Big Rock Jam Report during the preceding show, “Iron Maidens”, the free
lunchtime concerts from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Harbourside Park made its debut
with Pete Mills and the Brad Jefford Trio, and in coming weeks you can catch
live performances by the likes of the Ken Shorley Trio, Eastern Wind Ensemble,
Ian Foster, Peter Sullivan, Duane Andrews, Anthony Chafe, Fergus & Jim,
Denis Parker, John Clarke and Larry Foley, among numerous others.
Toronto-born, St-John’s-based multi-instrumentalist Duncan
Cameron and his mates from Bowline will be here in the studios at CHMR next
Saturday, at approximately 9 a.m., so I hope you can join me for that. They’ll be chatting about their upcoming
performance at the NL Folk Festival and no doubt other interesting musical
ventures on the horizon.

Two years after its debut of Hard Times, Blue Dawg Entertainment
is revisiting its tribute to Ray Charles & The Fathers of Soul. Join Erin
Sulley & Shawn Beresford, backed by the "Soul Allstars" for a
weekend dedicated to the music that still moves and inspires us all!! A show filled with classics by Ray Charles, Sam Cooke,
Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Etta James & Many More!! The first performance of Hard Times 2012 took
place last night at Fat Cat Blues Bar and the second show is tonight.
For those of you who simply can’t squeeze indoor venue
entertainment into their budget, the free lunchtime concerts in Harbourside Park are now on the go every Friday from
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pete Mills and
the Brad Jefford Trio opened the series, and upcoming female performers include
Chelsea Parsons, Matilda Goldie, Eastern Wind Ensemble, Brianna Gosse, Dana
Parsons Project, Fiona Shea, Maria Peddle, Leslie Aminson, Esmee Gilbert, and
Jenna Maloney.
There are several other festivities coming up in St. John’s, such as the George Street Festival from July
28th to the 31st; the Royal St. John’s Regatta on August
1st; and the St. John’s Downtown
Buskers Festival, the latter running in tandem with the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival from
August 3rd to the 5th. The Mount Pearl City Days celebration began
last night and runs through the weekend.
