Great Big Rock Jam Report

An organization known as the Portland/Jamestown/Winterbrook Recreation Committee has elected to name a new playground in memoriam for Jordan Wells, who died tragically on February 29 in a drowning incident.  The committee is hoping to raise approximately $10,000 towards the building of the playground in Jamestown, and online donations can be made via PayPal at www.portlandjamestownwinterbrookrecreation.com.

Two years after its debut of Hard Times, Blue Dawg Entertainment is revisiting its tribute to Ray Charles & The Fathers of Soul. Join Erin Sulley & Shawn Beresford, backed by the "Soul Allstars" for a weekend dedicated to the music that still moves and inspires us all!! A show filled with classics by Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Aretha Franklin, Etta James & Many More!!  The first performance of Hard Times 2012 took place last night at Fat Cat Blues Bar and the second show is tonight.

For those of you who simply can’t squeeze indoor venue entertainment into their budget, the free lunchtime concerts in Harbourside Park are now on the go every Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Pete Mills and the Brad Jefford Trio opened the series, and upcoming female performers include Chelsea Parsons, Matilda Goldie, Eastern Wind Ensemble, Brianna Gosse, Dana Parsons Project, Fiona Shea, Maria Peddle, Leslie Aminson, Esmee Gilbert, and Jenna Maloney.

There are several other festivities coming up in St. John’s, such as the George Street Festival from July 28th to the 31st; the Royal St. John’s Regatta on August 1st; and the St. John’s Downtown Buskers Festival, the latter running in tandem with the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival from August 3rd to the 5th.  The Mount Pearl City Days celebration began last night and runs through the weekend.

If you are situated in the provincial of NL and would like to join the newly-created and very informal St. John’s Antisocial Blues Conspiracy, visit nlbluesociety.blogspot.com.
